Food and Beverage Canada is pleased to share its submission to the government’s consultations on a P2 notice for primary food plastic packaging

September 1, 2023 (OTTAWA) – Food and Beverage Canada (FBC-ABC) is pleased to share its submission to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) consultations on the pollution prevention (P2) planning notice for primary food plastic packaging.

The food and beverage manufacturing industry in Canada is composed of nearly 8,000 businesses, primarily small and mid-sized enterprises, which are vital for transforming agricultural products into consumable goods for both domestic and international markets. These companies are conscious of the necessity to develop strategies for minimizing plastic waste, and many are engaged in industry initiatives such as the Canada Plastics Pact and/or are working towards their own sustainability targets. While we align with the government’s objectives in plastic waste reduction, we have reservations about the potential unintended consequences stemming from the current approach.

FBC-ABC would like to thank the members of its Ad-Hoc Working Group on Plastic Packaging for their contributions.
